Candy Cane City Playground
The Equipment
The red and white striped playground equipment which the park is named after is long gone, but Candy Cane City located in Meadowbrook Park is a great place to spend a day of fun with your kids.
Candy Cane City’s playground area includes 3 different play structures for differing ages and abilities. For the smallest guests there is a train structure with a slide. Toddlers and younger preschoolers may like the medium sized play structure with three slides and the older set can burn off their energy on the largest of the three. Overall there are 9 slides, 2 sets of monkey bars, a suspension bridge, and rock climbing wall scattered within the three separate sites. Two baby swings, four standard swings, a see saw and a tire bouncer round out the play equipment. All structures have mulch underneath.
The Scene
There are 10 benches and 7 picnic tables located in and around the playground area for resting and snacking. At 11am on a Thursday when we visited most of the playground was in full sun but several of the benches and tables were situated in shady spots to offer a respite from the heat. There is also a recreation building on site which houses a room to rent for parties and events and two indoor bathrooms that were locked with a sign, “For use for permitted visitors only” (those renting the building?). Two port-a-potties are located just outside of the fenced in play area.
As fun as the playground is at Candy Cane City, Meadowbrook Park offers many other activities to stretch out your visit. Adjacent to the play equipment are a large baseball field, a large soccer field, two basketball courts, 3 tennis courts and a bike trail. On the morning of our visit several preschoolers were riding bikes and scooters around the basketball courts. Two of the picnic tables are located between the play area and the courts enabling parents to be able to keep an eye on those kids riding and those who were playing on the equipment.
No trip to Meadowbrook Park would be complete without a walk over to see the horses at the Meadowside Stables. A 5 minute walk (if your child is in a stroller, 15 minutes by 4 year old power!) back towards East West Highway, all on grass or paved path puts you at the fence of the stable yard. Here you can watch the horses run and play right in the middle of Chevy Chase. The stable offers lessons and camps for kids ages 6 and up and hosts several horse shows each year.
